Demolition of the bridge superstructure is now substantially complete. Demolition of the old bridge at Pawtucket over Northern continues this week with removal of the south abutment. Initial work on the new northern abutment will also get underway this week.
The Merrimack Street over Merrimack Canal bridge is substantially complete and opened just in time for the City of Lights parade in late November!
BR-2 style crash rated safety rail was installed along the Merrimack Street curb edge of the bridge allowing for restoration and preservation of the historic rail along the canal edge of the bridge. The historic bridge rail was removed and retrofitted per today’s safety code with additional cross pieces. The original railing rosettes were restored and additional rosettes were cast and installed where missing from the original rail.
Remaining punch list items include painting the mounting bolts on the BR-2 rail and any additional touch-ups, permanent striping of the road surface, and planting a tree in an appropriate location near the bridge in Lucy Larcom Park. These items will be addressed later in the spring 2019.
